3 Practical Ways to Save Money at Uni

So you’re at Uni, living the dream but also trying to survive on a student loan budget. The struggle is real! I’ve been there. When I was at uni, money was tight and I was always trying to find easy ways I could save cash without taking away from hanging out with friends and doing my work. We’ve come up with some tips to help you shop smart and cut the cost of everything from your food shop to commuting.  Make every penny count!

1.    Bag yourself some freebies

  • I love reading but books can be so expensive, especially if you also need to buy them for classes. Have a look on Amazon for some free kindle books, that way you can save money and save space!

  • As a student, who doesn’t love free food? Check out food apps like Colonel’s Club for rewards like free hot wings or Pizza Express for birthday treats like prosecco!

2.    Food shop in the evenings and look for cheaper alternatives

The reduced section can be your best friend. After 6pm, most supermarkets heavily reduce their prices on different foods around the shop, including fresh fruit and veg and food from the deli. Keep to your grocery list and budget, but take a bit of time to explore if you can bag yourself some real healthy bargains.  If you are clever and swap luxury items for cheaper alternatives you could easily slash your food budget in half and save yourself the joy of only having peanut butter sandwiches for the last week of the month! Find those reduced yellow stickers and snap up those bargains!

3.     Cashback sites

We can’t get away from shopping, right?  So if you have to shop, why not get some money back while you do it?  You will be amazed at how much you can get back. Check some options out here!  If online shopping isn’t your thing, how about supermarket cashback apps?  Two that Money Saving Expert mention are Shopitize and CheckoutSmart.  I think as students, we wouldn’t say no to extra money, right?
